What Is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial, also called a clinical research study, is research that involves volunteers to evaluate whether an investigational treatment, such as a drug, is safe and effective for a specific condition. Every medication you’ve taken was once part of a clinical trial.

Participation in a clinical trial is completely voluntary. Before participating, volunteers go through an informed consent process where the research team explains the study, including what participants will be asked to do, potential risks and benefits, and visit requirements. Participants can withdraw from the trial at any time and for any reason.
